about JoAnne Bedient...

JoAnne Bedient is originally from SW Virginia. She received her art training from Ft. Hays Kansas State University in Hays Kansas. Her major emphasis was in ceramics and her minor in watercolor. She moved to Florida in 1980 and has lived in Ft Myers since. She and her husband, Perry, have two daughters, Bronwyn and Anna. Some of JoAnne's work has been influenced by her daughters' clothing and shoes through the years. Many of her brightly colored patterns and color combinations have come from a skirt of Anna's, now a student at Georgetown University, that she had when she was about 8 years old. Her series of shoes began while her daughter Bronwyn was a college student at UNC and bought a funky pair of red patent leather shoes at a resale shop. JoAnne began doing raku firings in 1988 and the majority of her most recent work is fired using this ancient Japanese process. All of her work is handbuilt - that means NOT using the potters wheel.
Her cats, clocks, pots, and shoes can be easily recognized by the black and white stripes and smoke patterns along with BOLD colors!
